Frequently Asked Questions
What is a medical alert system and how does it work?
A medical alert system is a wearable device that lets a person call for help and share their location without using a phone. At Life Assist Advantage, pressing the SOS button on a Mi-Lo device opens a two-way voice call over its own cellular connection. Each device has its own SIM card, so it works at home and away from home without pairing to a smartphone.
How much does a medical alert system cost in Canada?
With Life Assist Advantage, the cost has two parts. The Mi-Lo Pendant is CA$195, and the Mi-Lo Smartwatch is CA$269. The Mi-Lo Monitoring Subscription is $50 per month for Family Monitored or $60 per month for 911 Monitored, with quarterly and annual billing available. Annual saves $100 per year. Both devices need an active subscription to work.
What is the difference between family monitoring and professional monitoring?
The difference is who answers the alert. Our Family Monitored plan sends the call and notifications to the contacts you approve. Our 911 Monitored plan reaches a trained emergency response team that can coordinate EMS, fire, or police and share your emergency profile. Both are complete options, and you can switch at any time.
Should I get a Mi-Lo Pendant or a Mi-Lo Smartwatch?
It depends on how you’ll wear the device. The Mi-Lo Pendant brings several safety features together in one wearable, including SOS calling, two-way voice, location features, safe zone alerts, and fall detection, with a large SOS button, no screen to work around, and a longer battery life than the watch. The Mi-Lo Smartwatch stays on the wrist and stores up to 10 contacts. Battery life on both devices depends on how they are used, and using the Mi-Lo Beacon or Wi-Fi location at home helps it last longer. Location accuracy is the same on both.
What happens when someone presses the SOS button?
The device places a two-way voice call, so the person can speak and be heard without reaching a phone or knowing their address. With Life Assist Advantage, that call goes to your approved contacts on Family Monitored, or to a trained emergency response team on 911 Monitored. Location travels with the alert, and approved contacts get email and SMS notifications.
Is a medical alert device better than a cell phone for an older parent?
They solve different problems. Our Mi-Lo devices connect over their own cellular network, so an SOS call, two way voice, location, and caregiver alerts work without another phone nearby. A phone has to be found, unlocked, and used, which is difficult when someone needs help. That is the gap personal safety devices are built to close.
Are medical alert devices private, and who can see the location?
On the Life Assist platform, location is visible only to the approved contacts you name, caregivers you authorize, monitoring professionals, and responders when help is required. We do not sell customer data or use location for advertising. Personal and account information is stored on Canadian-based cloud servers, with privacy practices designed around applicable Canadian privacy requirements, including PIPEDA where it applies.
